10 Commandments to Becoming a Master Baker

There is something about the smell of freshly-baked feasts that makes one keep coming back for more and the same can be said about the art of fine baking. In the first part of this two-part series, we shared five commandments for aspiring and professional bakers to up their game and in this second and final part, we furnish the rest of the combination to unlock the road to baking excellence. Read on.

6. Thou Shalt Get a Digital Weighing Scale

Although that good old measuring cup may have served you well over the years, but to achieve perfection in your baking results, you need something more accurate. Get a digital weighing scale to make sure accurate quantities of ingredients go into your masterpieces and the results are also up to your expectations, and maybe even better!

7. Thou Shalt Not Use Melted Butter

Of course we all know that chilled butter is not a baker’s best friend and most recipes prescribe softened butter, but that doesn’t mean one gets the license to use melted butter. Melting butter causes crystallization of salt, which hampers the texture of the dough. To soften chilled butter, simply defrost it in a microwave for about 10-15 seconds.

8. Thou Shalt Not Overmix the Dough

When baking cookies, our desire to experiment often leaves us with more than a few ingredients that call for some thorough mixing. While a high quality stand mixer can help get the job done, you have to be careful not to overmix the dough. You know it’s time to stop when you can still see some of the last bits of dry flour in the dough.

9. Thou Shalt Read and Follow Every Step of the Recipe

This goes out especially to all those who believe they are too cool for school, and therefore, reading a recipe, in full, is complete out of question. Bear in mind that you may have an ocean of experience but when trying out something new, it is essential to go by the book. Go through every step of the recipe and be sure to follow each one when you put the apron on.

10. Thou Shalt Bake with Love

This is probably the most important of all. Every great baker and chef would agree that all great foods have one common ingredient – love. Remember that baking, or for that matter any subset of culinary arts, not only demands the right skills, ingredients and equipment, but also patience, passion and love. Blend ‘em all and see magic come to life!
