After the indulgence of Diwali, I find myself craving simple and comforting flavours. So while daal -chaawal takes care of my mealtimes, for breakfast I usually turn to a fresh and wholesome smoothie. Really, there’s hardly any season like winter for fruits and veggies in India.
It’s also the time when my favourite strawberries are available in abundance. Raspberries, on the other hand, because they aren’t grown here, I tend to keep some frozen ones in my freezer at all times. If you grew up in the ‘90s, then the berry-and-bananas combination is one that you’re only too familiar with. Honestly, it’s also one that I can never grow out of and one that I re-create when I want to turn to some comforting flavours for breakfast.
Frozen bananas can do wonders for milkshakes and smoothies – they end up giving them the texture a rich and creamy ice cream would – minus all the calories! And because ripe bananas are inherently so sweet, there’s hardly ever any need to add a sweetener. Unless of course the berries are particularly tart. Flax seeds are just a dash of some extra nutrition, you could even add some oats for texture.
This is a fairly simple breakfast to put together, and that’s perfect for busy mornings when you don’t want to spend all your time in the kitchen. Just put everything in the jar… and blend!!
